Progressive movement in Costa Rica

Traffic & Road Infrastructure

Many roads in Costa Rica are in a bad condition; even important main streets have sections with deep impact pot holes so stay alert while driving.  During the rainy season, on side streets and roads there can be small rivers from time to time that must be crossed.  If you are going to rent a car, it is extremely advisable to select a 4-wheel drive vehicle!

The bus is the most inexpensive means of transport in Costa Rica. However it is to be noted that the timetables are very convenient far away from San Jose. The most important bus station in San José is Coca Cola.

Busbahnhof

Although Costa Rica is a small country, there is a well developed regional airport system. The airlines Sansa, LACSA and Travelair have several daily times to the different regional airfields with up to 12-person turbo prop aircraft. A flight to Quepos (Manuel Antonio) costs only about USD$46.00 one way and is highly recommend that you make reservations.

Rent-a-Cars

In San José there are internationally well-known rental car businesses represented.  In particular, the high season (starting from the middle of December - February) you should absolutely reserve your rent-a-car before arriving.  It is again recommended to rent a car with four-wheel drive. The prices are however relatively high. For a Suzuki Sidekik A/C 4x4 one must count for instance USD$65.00 per day with free mileage, and/or USD$380.00 per week. For cars without four-wheel drive USD$40.00 - per day.
